There may also have been keen yachtsmen who considered they were excluded from the sport of sailing, for we find in the S.C.M. Post of November 17, 1904, that a Victoria Recreation Club member had protested against the rule that sailing races at the V.R.C. regatta were only open to members of the R.H.K.Y.C. He pointed out that several V.R.C. members were thus excluded, though they would like to compete.
The S.C.M. Post of December 15, 1904, reports the formation of the new body, as follows:
"A meeting of those gentlemen who decided a short time ago to form a one-design sailing club, was held yesterday evening at 10, Wyndham Street. Mr. E.M. Hazeland was voted to the chair. It was decided that the name of the club should be "The Hongkong Corinthian Yacht Club." Dr. F.W. Clark was chosen Commodore; Mr. B.M. Hazeland vice-Commodore; Mr. J. Reidie Hon. Secretary and Treasurer; Mr. W.A. Crake Official Treasurer; and Messrs. F. Howell, M. McIver, J. Hands and W.H. Donald, the Committee.
"The question was raised as to the sail area. The Chairman said two boats had been built which were seaworthy craft but under-canvassed. The sail area was limited to a hundred and fifty square feet by the rules. He thought the sail area sufficient for racing amongst themselves, but, of course, a better speed could be obtained with more canvas. After discussion it was decided to keep the sail area to two hundred and fifty square feet at present. The question of keel weight outside and in also cropped up, but it was decided to leave these matters to the Committee.
"The following boats were named: Gael (M. McIver), Nina (E.M. Hazeland), Asthore (J. Hands), Waratah (W.H. Donald), Cam (F. Howell) Hibernia (E.F. Gibson).
"The Club promises to be a strong one.
Thus was commenced the H.K.C.Y.C. It attracted a big membership, and at a later period introduced motor-boat racing, when such craft were an innovation.
As we have seen, this club flourished for some years. In 1910 it was able to occupy new premises, which were situated on the Wan Chai seafront near the old No. 2 Police Station. By 1920, however, the Corinthian Yacht Club had lost so much support that it decided with the coming loss of its site, owing to the Praya East reclamation, as an additional reason to liquidate.
For several years thereafter the club's premises were occupied by the reclamation contractors, the Sang Lee firm, as their offices. A block of Chinese flats now occupies the site, standing several hundred yards inland.
